Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual discipline that originated in India and etymologically means union. It is related to meditation practices in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism and according to its practitioners, it results in the union of the individual soul with the divinity (Brahman, Shiva, Vishnu, Kali, etc.), i.e. the union of being with the whole, the perception that the self is spiritual and not material, and physical and mental well-being.

There are three types of yoga that are considered fundamental: raja yoga, gana yoga, and karma yoga. But there are also traditional schools that should not be identified as fundamental in yoga: Hatha yoga, Bhakti, Ashtanga viniasa yoga, Kriya yoga, Kundalini yoga, and Yoga nidra. There are also modern schools, created in the second half of the twentieth century, which should not be identified as fundamental in yoga: Mimansa yoga, Natha yoga, Purna yoga, Sajayá yoga, Sarva yoga and Swasthya yoga. Tantra yoga is not considered a type of yoga, it is another Hindu doctrine.

Gurus from India introduced yoga in the West from Swami Vivekananda’s success in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1980s, yoga became popular throughout the Western world as a form of physical exercise. Studies estimate that about 8.5% of the Western population practice or have practiced yoga ever in their lifetime. Among the most popular yoga variants are dynamic yoga (assimilable to vinyasa), hatha yoga, astanga yoga, kundalini yoga and bikram yoga.

Hatha yoga is the most widespread yoga in the world and is known for its asanas or body positions, whose purpose is to make the body fit for meditation. Asanas generate physical and mental serenity. One of its main asanas is padmasana or lotus position and the salutation to the sun or Suria namaskar.

Since 2014 the United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day.
